1900 Kruger Pond Single Shaft

1900-Kruger-Pond

The 1900 Kruger Pond has the highest mintage in the series, but is still difficult to find in any grade. This is largely because the majority of coins struck in 1900 were backdated to 1898.

1900 Pond Forgeries – "The Perfect Fake"

Fake Kruger Pond

The images above and below show a known counterfeit — the so-called Perfect Fake — which many say looks better than the original. At first glance, it may appear authentic due to its clean strike and sharp details, particularly on the eagle’s chest.

However, under closer inspection, several issues become clear: the reverse is off-center, the top half of the coin appears faded or flattened, and the eagle’s breast detail is unnaturally refined — even more so than the 1892 original.

I recently saw a coin dealer in KZN (South Africa) selling one of these for under R10,000 — either unaware or dishonest. He sold what he claimed was a high-grade 1900 Pond, but it was clearly a fake. Either he doesn’t know coins or he is a crook.

That said, owning a Perfect Fake is not entirely without merit. These pieces are part of ZAR numismatic history. The dies were removed from the Mint without permission and used to strike these forgeries. For a time, they were passed off as part of the mysterious Kruger Millions. Eventually, the truth surfaced, and the perpetrators were caught.

Value-wise, these should trade for no more than their gold value. But they are necessary to complete a full ZAR collection — as long as they're clearly labeled as fakes.

Important note: These are often misleadingly referred to as "restrikes." A restrike must be minted with original dies and the permission of the mint. That clearly did not happen here. Any dealer calling this a restrike is being dishonest — it is a forgery, plain and simple.

1900 Single Shaft Kruger Pond – Market Summary

The 1900 Pond is a popular date among ZAR collectors, appearing consistently in U.S. auctions over the last 15 years. It is well-represented in mint state grades, with a strong showing in MS62 to MS64 and several premium results for MS65.

  • MS61 to MS63: Commonly seen and generally trade between $1,200 and $3,000, depending on eye appeal and market timing.
  • MS64: Well-represented and sought-after, selling for $3,000 to $4,700.
  • MS65: Scarce and highly desirable. Notable prices include $6,462 (Aug 2014) and $4,800 (Oct 2024).
  • AU55 to AU58: Sell in the range of $800 to $1,200, with frequent appearances throughout the 2010s.
  • XF and lower grades: Appear less frequently, often under $600.

The 1900 Pond offers a wide range of grades, making it accessible to both entry-level and advanced collectors. The consistent demand in mint state confirms its position as a cornerstone of late 19th-century South African numismatics.

The 1900 Kruger Pond is considered both fascinating and mysterious within the ZAR series. Although official records show that 788,000 coins were struck in 1900, very few examples appear in the marketplace—especially compared to the far more common 1898 Pond.

This has led to the widely accepted theory that many of the coins dated 1898 were actually struck in 1900 using the same dies. Despite the large reported mintage for 1900, genuine 1900-dated coins are seldom seen at auction, particularly in higher grades.

The scarcity of these coins, especially in Mint State, makes the 1900 Pond a key rarity for serious ZAR collectors. When available, even AU grades can command strong prices, but there are very few recent sales to establish firm pricing trends.

Collectors regard this coin as a highly desirable anomaly—a high-mintage, low-survivor issue that adds depth and intrigue to any South African coin collection.
