1893 Kruger Pond

The 1893 Kruger Pond

The 1893 Kruger Pond is surprisingly scarce in the collector market despite a relatively high mintage of 61,926. High-grade examples are particularly rare, and even circulated versions are infrequently seen for sale. This scarcity adds to its appeal among collectors of ZAR gold coinage.

1893 Kruger Pond Forgeries

There are no widespread reports of forgeries of this coin. However, as with all rare coins, collectors are advised to acquire certified pieces or ensure provenance before purchase.

The 1893 Single Shaft Pond: Scarce in High Grades

The 1893 Single Shaft Pond is not considered exceptionally rare in terms of total surviving examples, but it is notoriously difficult to find in high grades. While many circulated specimens have appeared at auction over the years, mint state coins are significantly less common, and high-grade examples are rarely offered.

Throughout the early 2010s, auction appearances were frequent, with coins graded AU53 to AU58 typically selling between $1,300 and $2,000. One standout result came in April 2013, when an NGC MS65 fetched a remarkable $30,550, highlighting how condition dramatically influences value.

Over the past five years, however, fewer examples have come to market. In January 2025, a rare NGC MS65 appeared again, this time realizing a solid $24,000. Lower-grade coins continue to trade at more modest prices, reflecting the availability of circulated examples and the scarcity of premium ones.

The sales history of the 1893 Single Shaft Pond illustrates its appeal to both entry-level and seasoned collectors — with exceptional premiums placed on top-condition pieces that rarely surface.
