How much is a Kruger Pond worth?

The value of a Kruger Pond varies tremendously when you have to consider the following factors.

1 Selling a Kruger Pond to a Pawn shop (Gold dealers)?

Gold dealers will never pay you anywhere near the value of a Kruger Pond. They will only pay a percentage below gold melt value. Another reason not to sell the Kruger Pond to the Gold Dealer is that he will probably sell the coin to a refinery who will melt the coin and the Kruger Pond coin will be lost to history.

2 Are you selling to a coin Dealer or a Collector?

A coin dealer may pay you less for a Kruger Pond than a colector unless the dealer has a collector already who is interested in your Kruger Pond. If the collector needs your Kruger Pond to complete his collection he will normally pay top $.

3 How rare is the Kruger Pond.

Some Kruger Ponds are worth more than others. For instance the 1892 Single shaft is worth more than the 1892 Double Shaft even though the Double Shaft was supposedly removed from circulation. A 1900 is worth more than an 1898 even though the mintage figures for a 1900 are much higher than an 1898.

4 The most important factor in getting value for your Kruger Pond is the condition of the gold coin. Check below to value your Kruger Pond. A high Grade uncirculated Kruger Pond is worth much more than 50 times the value of a low quality Kruger Pond.

Please see the below table. I have used a coin Auction company to give values for an 1892 Double Shaft Kruger Pond. The are a few anomalies but it can be seen the higher the coin the higher value realized in 2011.

1892-Kruger-Pond-worn

The above is a 1892 Double Shaft Kruger Pond. To a lay person it looks to be in very good condition, but it can be seen that President Krugers hair has been worn away. There are 1000's of these Kruger ponds in this condition hence this Kruger Pond is only worth a few per cent over gold value.

Todays gold price (August 2011) is $1660.00 per ounce. So the Kruger Pond would be worth around $400.00. The value of this Kruger Pond would be closely fixed to the price of Gold.

1892-Kruger-Pond-VF35

The above Kruger Pond gold coin was graded by NGC and received a Grade of VF35. This condition is below what is normally the minimum grade value for a collectable coin. As it can be seen President Kruger has more hair than the hair less coin above hence it will be worth more.

1892-Kruger-Pond-XF45

The above Kruger Pond gold coin was Graded by NGC and received a Grade of XF45. This is normally the minimum grade value for a collectable coin. As it can be seen President Kruger has more hair than the hair less coin above hence it will be worth more. It could have been graded lower due to the scratch on President Kruger's shoulder.

A Kruger Pond with a Grade of XF45 state was sold at auction for around $850. in January 2011.

1892-Kruger-Pond-AU53

The above Kruger Pond gold coin was graded by NGC and received a Grade of AU53. AU stands for Almost Uncircluated and is a very collectable coin. There is not much difference between the hair on the XF45 and the AU53 Kruger Pond but if you look at the beard you can see the AU53 is better distinguished hence the better grading.
